Call Center Employees Who Were Denied Overtime Pay May Be Able to Collect Unpaid Overtime Wages

New York 10/04/2010 04:42 PM GMT (WooEB)

The overtime attorneys working with IQOvertime.com are available to review unpaid overtime claims from call center workers and customer service representatives who regularly work more than 40 hours a week and have been denied overtime pay. In general, customer service representatives and call center employees who do not meet one of the federal overtime exemptions, which are typically reserved for executive, professional and administrative employees, are entitled to receive 1.5 times their regular rate of pay for every hour worked in excess of 40 during a single workweek. If you have been denied overtime pay as a call center employee, visit http://www.iqovertime.com/call-center-and-customer-service-representatives-unpaid-overtime--41077.html to find out if you can collect back overtime pay.

Overtime violations can affect workers in any industry, and call center employees are not immune from these illegal wage and hour practices. In fact, APAC Customer Services Inc. agreed to pay $4 million to settle an unpaid overtime claim which alleged that the company failed to pay its customer service representatives proper overtime wages in violation of federal and state laws. Sprint/United Management Co. also faced three class action lawsuits on behalf of call center employees who alleged that the telecommunications company failed to pay wages and overtime in violation of federal labor laws. The collective action lawsuits settled for $8.77 million, which was divided into three separate settlement funds.

Call center employees who have been denied overtime pay may be able to file an unpaid overtime lawsuit to collect up to three years of back pay, as well as an equal amount in liquidated damages and attorneys’ fees. If you have been denied overtime as a customer service representative, visit http://www.iqovertime.com and complete the free case review form. Holland call center hopes to employ hundreds

HOLLAND, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – On Thursday, Holland welcomed a call center by a company called NOVO 1.

That company hopes to hire 300 people over the next two years.

Experts recently said that the U.S. would do away with low-cost call center jobs, since it's cheaper to contract that work to overseas companies. However, that's not the case here.

The new set-up in Holland is one that many Americans would expect to see in countries like India and China or in eastern Europe, but instead Holland is home to one of the newest call centers built in America.

It's a story that many in Michigan can relate to, out of work for over two years, Mark Shaffner of Zeeland lost his job and was relying on his wife's income.

“Never suspected anything like this would come about, especially for myself,” said Shaffner.

Now Shaffner is working as a team leader at NOVO 1's call center, a new life and a new job at Holland's newest business.

“Everybody's been depleted from unemployment, just a tough time for everybody,” said Shaffner. “Wonderful to see a company like this come in.”

Shaffner may owe his job to the minor trend of 'onshoring,' or bringing some jobs back to America. Companies like Ford, Caterpillar and GE have brought some manufacturing jobs back and NOVO 1 is doing the same for call service.

“What's left are the complicated calls, and it's not working over there,” said president and CEO of NOVO 1 Mary Murcott. “and the cost, it's cheaper to do it in America rather than overseas.”

Murcott says for years companies sent call center jobs overseas, figuring their costs by the number of calls they took as well as the cost per minute. That resulted in a culture where the goal was to get people off the phone as soon as possible, not to fix the problem.

NOVO 1 has abandoned that approach and will apply a new philosophy at the call center in Holland.

“If people call over and it takes three or four calls to get your problem solved, then the right metric is not cost per call, but cost per resolution,” said Murcott.

In the end, it's all about jobs. The goal at the facility in Holland is to provide service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, putting more people like Shaffner to work.

“Very big load off my wife's shoulders,” said Shaffner, “her not having to support us, me just being able to bring a paycheck in is a wonderful blessing.”

The NOVO 1 call center currently has one client but is getting interest from others, which means more people from the Holland area could soon be working at the enormous facility that has the potential to employ hundreds.

You can find more information about NOVO 1 at their website www.novo1.com.

Call center adds 500 Omaha jobs

In a possible sign of a brightening economy, Omaha's West Corp. will be adding 500 full-time jobs at one of its Omaha call centers.

The new positions come as the result of increased demands from several clients, including leading communications, medical and sports entertainment providers, West officials said. West's Monday announcement said the jobs will be added at its facility at 9910 Maple St.

The Omaha-based communications giant said the positions would pay $9 an hour plus benefits, including paid training and a 401(k) plan.

The company had announced earlier this year that it would be laying off about 300 workers. Now with the new business, some of those layoffs will be avoided, and workers who left the company in good standing will be offered the chance to return to one of the new jobs, said company spokesman David Pleiss.

“Certainly for us, we're thrilled to have this additional business and to be able to bring it to Omaha,'' Pleiss said.

David Brown, chief executive of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, said the new jobs were good news for the city.

“It's always another good sign that our economy is doing well when an employer like West adds 500 jobs. We're happy they're doing it here.''

The new jobs will bring the number West employs in Omaha to more than 3,000, Pleiss said.

West will be offering the jobs on both a temporary and permanent basis in an effort to make positions available to college students and others looking just for summer jobs, said Geoff Heller, the company's director of human resources.

Most of the positions focus on taking incoming calls from customers inquiring about existing accounts. The company also is seeking to fill some English/Spanish and English/French bilingual positions.

Candidates will need to have communication and computer skills and be required to pass a background check and drug screen, the company said.

Call center Transcom Asia denies Bacolod layoffs

Outsourcing firm Transcom Asia has denied there will be massive layoffs in its Bacolod operations following reports that close to 170 call center agents had been retrenched last week.

“Nobody has been [discharged]. We need to go through a process until we identify justification and until such time, I don’t want to speculate," Philippine country manager Siva Subramaniam said in an e-mail.

On Tuesday, a text message from a call center agent circulated, claiming that six were being terminated for failing to reach certain targets.

As of press time, however, none of the complainants have publicly come out despite earlier reports that two of them were planning to file a case against the outsourcing company.

Subramaniam said he could not reveal exactly how many people would exit by the end of the year, if ever it happens, adding “this is a private matter between Transcom and the employees."

“All I can say is that we have no massive layoffs and this whole affair has been blown out of proportion by the media," he added.

Transcom Asia, one of the four major call centers operating in the city, opened on Aug. 1 in a 1,000-seat facility at Lopue’s South Square.

Africa a call center alternative to India?

WASHINGTON: Some US lawmakers and think tanks believe that Africa can be a much cheaper alternative to call centers in India.

The issue came up briefly for discussion during a Congressional hearing on US-Africa Trade relations.

"Is there any possibility of having call centers in Africa, in your opinion?" asked Congressman Donald Payne, at the joint hearing convened by Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

"I don't know whether that has been explored," said Karen Tandy, senior vice president, public affairs and communications, Motorola.

"However, it makes sense that it is certainly possible in Africa," she said.

"There are a tremendous number of entrepreneurs springing up throughout the continent that we are also investing and giving grant money to and technology, so there is no reason why a call center couldn't be part of the future in Africa," Tandy said.

"I would echo that," observed Greg Lebedev, adviser to the president US Chamber of Commerce and Chairman, Center for International Private Enterprise. Africa has a wonder resource of English language speakers, he added.

"Certainly, there is some market maturation in India right now and one could argue there might be cost-competitive advantages in Africa. So I think that, to your point and to Tandy's point, that's a sensible area in which to look," Lebedev said.

Call Center Outsourcing: Evaluating a Providers Customer Support Processes

With a number of companies turning to contact center outsourcing today to cut costs and increase customer satisfaction, there are important criteria decision makers should consider that can make or break success.

Because there are some many providers offering call center outsourcing services they claim are “the best” it can be difficult to narrow down the service that truly meet a company’s needs.

A recent Forrester (News - Alert) report by analyst Elizabeth Herrell, with Simon Yates and Lauren E. Nelson, “Twelve Criteria for Contact Center Outsourcers,” reveals 12 key requirements and considerations to help guide decision makers.

Aside from considering costs, the organizational structure of a provider and identifying the technology in use, it is also essential to examine the outsourcer’s customer support offerings and their internal processes.

A closer look at these elements will help decide if the provider can effectively manage its operations and deliver quality service for customers with every interaction.

How to be a Good Customer Care Executive?

As customer service representatives are the key strength for any successful organization, and keep you connect with your potential customers. So customer care executives should have excellent verbal and interpersonal skills, including being receptive to other's views and opinions.

In the recent time, it can be difficult to provide excellent customer service for each of the calls, especially when they have to deal with angry customers who might had to wait on hold for an hour or more before they even reach you. Often, the customer care executives will only have to answer the phone to listen to an immediate escalation of a customer angry voice.

Its very tempting to put on the defensive, it's much better to let the customer continues to say what I mean. Angry customers who feel as if they were really being listened cooled off faster than customers who think that the customer care representative is not really concerned about their needs.
Customers who are angry are going to blame anyone for the problem they have, do not take it personally, instead, ensure them that their struggle has been ended now and issues will be resolved at the earliest. It is the responsibility of customer care representatives to make their customers happy and satisfied before hang up the phone.

It is important to realize that the customer believes s\he is talking to the particular company. they are unaware or not interested that they are talking with a very good lady named Gelsey or some one else who has her own family problems. All they know is that they have a problem and you caused it, that's why want to know what to do about it from your end. And this is you responsibilities to resolve all their issues till hang up the phone..
All customers don't h same type of attitude, many customers are very nice and just have a question about your service.

The key, however to provide best customer service, in spite of the situation is completely focused on the customer who is talking. Customer Service Representative is the key person who represent the image of any organization, and help the company to make a faith in the eyes of your business assets i.e Customers. If a customer has angered hard before, you should be able to let go of the anger before speaking to the next customer or notice through the call.

Iowa Call Center Becomes First To Accept Texts To 911

Got a problem and dialing the phone is completely out of the question? You're in luck... if you live in Waterloo, Iowa, or its immediate vicinity. Starting yesterday, the 911 emergency facility there became the first call center in the country to begin accepting text messages for emergency situations -- and they'll reply via text, too, when appropriate.

While the move may seem frivolous and even foolish -- since typing a text invariably takes longer than making a voice call -- this is actually a really positive development. It's easy to imagine emergency situations where voice calls just won't work, whether the caller is unable either to speak or hear due to a medical condition or injury, or the emergency involves, say, an intruder in the house while the victim is hiding somewhere inside and doesn't want to be heard. Just hope you have a quiet keypad on your phone....

How Call Center Agents Can Save Money

MANILA – Although call center agents have relatively high-paying jobs, their lifestyle often eats away at their money.

Efren Ll. Cruz, a personal finance adviser, said that call center agents can spend all of their income in a short period of time, partly because they deal with high stress levels and fatigue from working late at night.

“They tend to spend, not regularly, but on expensive things. Like buying things from a 24/7 store which sells more expensive things. They ride cabs to work or going home,” he said at the 2009 Call Center Conference and Expo in Pasay City.

“Because they’re young, there’s a tendency to compete with each other, not just in the way they work but in the way they dress. I’ve heard stories like, in one call center, many of the ladies there have extended eyelashes. That will cost you,” Cruz added.

Call center agents also have unlimited Internet access, so some tend to buy expensive but low-quality things from the Internet.

He also explained that since call center employees leave work in the evenings, they have a tendency to feel like “it’s party time” and become a bit more loose with their activities, most of which lead to spending money.

Just like everyone else, call center agents always face the temptation to spend. However, Cruz said, there are ways to earn more from your high-paying job, simply by saving your money.

“You have to realize that it’s hard to save money. But don’t use that as an excuse not to save,” he said.

Here are some of Cruz’s practical tips on how you can boost your savings. These are based on his book “The Complete Pinoy Guide to Personal Finance.”

Vangent call center in Riverview to employ at least 600

Vangent Inc.’s new Tampa area customer service center will accept its first 1-800-Medicare telephone call Tuesday morning as dignitaries and television news reporters watch.

The company is hosting a 9 a.m. ceremony at 100 Legacy Park in Riverview, the 99,000-square-foot call center that Vangent has subleased from Home Depot Inc.

The Arlington, Va-based information technology management and outsourcing company has hired between 50 to 100 employees so far and expects to hire a total of 1,000 by Nov. 15, the start of Medicare’s open enrollment period. About 400 will be temporary employees and only work through Dec. 31.

Vangent, which primarily works for the federal government, has 6,000 employees who work in locations around the world, said Eileen Cassidy Rivera, vice president of communications and investor relations. It has other centers, including offices in Iowa, Kentucky, Arizona and Kansas, that also service 1-800-Medicare.

The company chose the Tampa site because of its turnkey operation and the large number of Hispanic workers who live in the region, Rivera said. There is a growing number of Spanish-speaking Medicare beneficiaries, and “it’s nice to help them in their native language,” she said.

San Francisco Links 311 Call Center to Twitter

Listen up, San Francisco residents. Is there a leaky fire hydrant on the corner? A huge pothole on your street? Unsightly graffiti on your building? Starting today, you can contact city 311 officials via Twitter.

Mayor Gavin Newsom and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone on Tuesday announced that the city's non-emergency 311 information service will accept inquiries and complaints via the ubiquitous micro-blogging service.

To "tweet" into the SF 311 call center, visit sftwitter.sfgov.org. and click the "Follow Me" link to create a two-way follow. Users will then receive an email and/or direct message from the call center with the response, "How can I help you?"

Users who do not have a Twitter account will be asked to register, but they will only have to go through the sign-up process once. The city considered auto-follow, but found that "two way follow makes it easier to create requests."

Users can then write a direct message or Tweet to @SF311 from a browser or smartphone. You can also text complaints from regular cell phones. Address the text to "40404" and type "d sf311 [message]" in the body, remembering to include a space between the "d" and the "s".

Operators are manning 311 calls and inquiries 24 hours a day, though "the amount of time it takes for SF311 to receive the tweet will vary based on the response of the Twitter network," according to the city.

The idea came about after Newsom visited Twitter headquarters several weeks ago and mentioned that a constituent had sent him a Twitter message about a pothole. He and Stone then started talking about "how we can get Twitter to be involved in advancing, streamlining, and supporting the governance of cities," Newsom said at a press conference that was broadcast online.

Investment In IP Contact Centers

The time has come to do investment in Internet Protocol (IP) contact center solutions.IP technology has been around for more than 15 years and has been used for corporate network infrastructure for most of that time. But contact center vendors took their time delivering functionally rich and technically advanced IP-based contact center solutions that were competitive with their time division multiplexing (TDM)-based predecessors. The IP contact center is ready for prime time. Today many companies also want vendors to continue involves IP, though to support their legacy TDM-based environments.
The advantage of the IP contact center are as follows.

Save network management fees and carrier costs: IP technology eliminates the need to use a carrier or network management application to efficiently route calls between various contact center sites. This results in major cost savings; even though many companies pay carriers as little as two to three cents per minute, these expenses can add up over time.

Multiple automatic call distributors: IP technology enables enterprises to manage all of their contact centers from one central location. This means that expensive contact center technology management staff is no longer needed for all major locations.

Reduce management burden: IP technology eliminates the need for multiple copies of the same application. In an IP network, the primary site functions as the central "brain" and provides all application functionality. As a result, it is unnecessary to maintain separate copies of various management and supporting contact center applications, such as workforce management, recording, quality assurance, surveying, coaching, performance management, email response management, etc., at each site. This generally alleviates the management burden and also reduces software licensing and maintenance fees.

Cost effective: Provides contact center technology cost-effectively to branch offices, satellite offices, retail locations and remote or at-home agents. IP contact center environments allow agents to be set up anywhere there's an Internet connection. This allows enterprises to provide sophisticated contact center technology in locations where it was previously not practical. Additionally, it facilitates the roll-out of remote, or at-home agents, who are expected to play an increasingly important role in contact centers during the next five years.

Optimizes agent usage: IP technology enables enterprises to route transactions to agents more efficiently by eliminating the need for the network management applications and routing and queuing restrictions that have previously hampered multi-site operating environments.

Routes each transaction: In an IP environment, agents are managed directly from the primary site. Transactions can be routed to the most appropriate agent, regardless of where they are physically located in the network.

Centralization: Provides a single, unified view of contact center operations. Because all contact center transactions and activities are managed from a central site, there is only one set of reports for the entire operation.

Standardization of service quality: Since all agents and systems are tied into the same hub in an IP environment, enterprises can standardize the handling of all transactions. IP technology is exciting because it's agnostic about the types of transactions that it handles and can quickly and easily move all kinds of transactions anywhere within its network.

In terms of technology used in call center is second to none and has successfully launched India’s one and only end to end CISCO based IP network call center by the name Vcare call center based out of a small suburb in the national capital territory region, This center has all the modern facilities a center must have and is situated in a huge campus spanning more than 11000 sq. ft, employing over 400 people and is proudly expanding at an exponential growth rate of 15% quarter over quarter.

150 new jobs at Accrington call centre

ONE hundred and fifty new jobs are being created at an Accrington call centre.

The announcement represents a complete turnaround for the site at the Globe Centre, St. James’ Square.

Last year Thomas Cook closed its call centre as part of moves to save £2million, putting 260 jobs at risk.

But at the 11th hour Sitel, a firm which provides call centers for internet-based travel agent Expedia, took over the site, saving 150 posts.

And now the firm has announced that it will expand the operation by the autumn, doubling the workforce.

Hyndburn Council leader Peter Britcliffe said: “We have worked very closely with Sitel, which is based in the Globe Centre, over a number of weeks.
