GLOVERSVILLE -- The company planning to open a massive call center in Gloversville has upped the number of people it plans to hire.
King TeleServices LLC Friday morning said it now plans to hire 1,200 part-time workers for the downtown center, which will occupy the former Frontier Communications space on Church Street.
The company declined to say whether the jobs would be temporary or permanent.
The announcement was well-received in Gloversville, a Fulton County city where at least one of every 10 workers is unemployed. Boosters also see the project as a boon for the city's downtown.
"It'll be really nice to have that kind of activity in the downtown again," said Chauncey McCormick, owner of Grandma Millie's bakery, which is just a few blocks from the call center site.
King says it hopes to have the call center open by fall, and the company has scheduled training sessions for late next month.
King has also scheduled a job fair for Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 60 Church St. And beginning next week, walk-in applications will be accepted on Mondays between 9 a.m. and noon and Fridays between 3 and 6 p.m.

Call center jobs at risk in Fargo
FARGO (AP) - A call center company says it hopes to find new positions for 47 workers at a Fargo call center who might lose their jobs.
Danny Miles, a human resources director for the parent company of SEI, says 17 Fargo employees are affected immediately and 30 more will be affected later this summer.
SEI provides call center customer service to clients worldwide. Miles say several customers plan to cut back on the amount of business they do with SEI, putting the 47 jobs in jeopardy.

Convergys opens 3 new call centers in Philippines, targets 20,000 employees by year-end
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A U.S.-based call center company opened three additional facilities in the Philippines Thursday and plans to employ 4,000 more workers by the end of this year, its top official said.
Dave Dougherty, president and chief executive of Cincinnati, Ohio-based Convergys Corp., joined Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and other officials in ceremonies to inaugurate a new call center Thursday in a technology park in Laguna province near Manila.
Convergys opened another call center in suburban Quezon city and a third in Cebu city in the central Philippines also on Thursday.
Dougherty said two more call centers are under construction in the country and the company "continues to see growth and development" despite a slowing economy.
He said that Convergys already employs over 16,000 people in 12 call centers in the Philippines — including the three facilities just opened — only five years after starting operations. The company's workforce will reach 20,000 by the end of the year, he added.

US recession "opportunity" for call centers: experts
Philippine call center companies should treat the recession in the United States as an opportunity rather than as an obstacle for growth and expansion, industry experts and an economist said.
During the Call Center Expo and Conference held recently, executives from call center companies said they believe that the ongoing recession in the United States, where a huge chunk of Philippine business process outsourcing or BPO clients are, will be beneficial in the long run since it will create more opportunities for the country.
Dan Reyes, president of Sitel and director of the Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP) said that the US recession may have some negative impact only in the immediate term.
“There may be reduced demand in certain industries but the need to reduce costs may likely lead to more outsourced work to countries like the Philippines,” he said.

200 new jobs expected at Sydney call centre
Nova Scotia Business Inc., the province's business development agency, announced Monday it will provide the ICT Group with a five-year payroll rebate of up to $1.4 million.
The company has to reach its target of 200 jobs to get the whole amount. BPO Services is at booming satge in India.
ICT says it recently landed a contract to provide client support for Bell Mobility. Much of the new service work will be done out of its centre in Sydney, which opened in October 1998 and was one of the first big call centres in Cape Breton.
Economic Development Minister Angus MacIsaac said the payroll rebate shows the province's commitment in helping companies create "quality employment."
Each call-centre job pays about $26,000 a year, including benefits, according to NSBI, and some of the new positions will be posted immediately.

Germany (east) another destination for Call Centre
Local authorities and politicians are enthusiastic and have positive vibes for this industry and growth of it. The economics minister of the eastern state of Brandenburg turned up in person when Walter Services opened its call centre in Frankfurt an der Oder in 2005. Unemployment is running at around 18 per cent in this city on the Polish border. By the end of this year, the company will employ 1,000 staff. It already has 2,000 workers on its books in Magdeburg in the neighbouring state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Others speak of intense pressure, close monitoring of their calls, rude clients and respondents irritated at receiving unsolicited calls, these are the common types of situations and gestures which an employee must be used to of it. Sociologist Karen Shire has been researching the sector for the past four years, funded by Germany's powerful trade union movement. Call-centre companies are treating the impoverished eastern states as a kind of "testing ground," Shire believes.
Call-centre workers feel their jobs are insecure. They often do not have fixed contracts. In her book, written jointly with Ursula Holtgrewe, Shire writes that a full-time call-centre employee in the east of the country earns on average 17,469 euros (24,940 dollars) a year, by contrast with 22,618 euros in the west.
But most important thing is the sector continues to expand in the east, profiting from Germany's continuing economic upswing that has slashed unemployment across the country. By contrast, growth in the call-centre sector has come to a halt in south-western Germany. In this prosperous region, where unemployment is running at a little under 5 per cent, wages are too high for call-centre jobs to be attractive.

Call centers even for small businesses
But what about smaller companies that want to take advantage of the outsourcing trend?
For the most part, outsourcing has remained prohibitive and daunting to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), many of which are unable to realize greater operational efficiencies because most business process outsourcing (BPO) firms continue to focus on top-tier corporations.
Enter ePLDT and its Unified Contact Center Plus--a pre-integrated suite of cost-efficient call center applications that are meant to be easy to install and maintain.
The value proposition of the service is that it is oriented toward smaller businesses which need smaller contact center services than those normally offered by multinational BPO firms.

How do I improve call centre process functions?
When it comes to process efficiency, call centre managers can learn a lot from manufacturing. Production managers in manufacturing companies are the masters of optimised process management and have a sixth sense for unnecessary or low value-adding activity.
